Pretzel, smelt and lamprey: who registers regional brands and how? / Delovoy Peterburg
In the summer of 2019, Russian civil law has been amended in the branch of intellectual law. In particular, the expression “geographical indication”, which identifies regional brands, has been formalized in legislation.
Rospatent has not yet received the expected number of applications for the registration of geographical indications, which is explained by the current difficult situation for the business. However, by the end of the year, experts predict that business activity will recover and the number of applications will increase.
Furthermore, owing to the current restrictions on travelling abroad, some experts consider the registration of geographical indications a marketing and legal tool that will be useful to promote a brand among tourists travelling in Russia.
Vera Zotova, an Associate in the Intellectual Property and Information Technology practice, gave comments for the business newspaper “Delovoy Peterburg” on what are the advantages of a registered geographical indication for a rights holder and cited an example from foreign practice.
